Well in terms of getting new content.. now we know why it's not a pay to play game :P
I really hope they do implement this soon, I don't want to see guild wars prophecies players only get good new content when a new chapter comes out.

I'm not a technical person, but I'm sure there's something to do with the way that GW is set up vs many other pay to play online RPG's that makes an auction house a difficult system to set up. I bet if it was easy for them to set up an auction house, they'd have already done it. They're intelligent people. Also, you notice in every communication that they'll mention that they're working on a way to 'greatly improve trading' etc. but they never mention the words auction house. So I'm not getting my hopes up for that.
However, a possible suggestion, which isn't nearly as good as an auction house, but will solve a lot of problems and may actually be technically implementable within GWs current scheme might be:
Weapon / armor traders that are very similar to the current material traders. GW servers just keep a database of all of the possible modifications each item in the game can have (+11% dmg in stance, +15% wrap of enchant, etc.) and their current value. If you want to buy a 20/20 fire staff with an enchant wrap on it, you go to the trader and make your custom weapon. It sums up the current value of all of the mods you want (charges a premium) and gives you a price you could pay. After you buy it, the system registers the demand for those mods by increasing the price slightly for the next buyer. (the exact same way the material/rune traders work). If there's too great an imbalance, a modification could sell out. If you're a seller, the trader evaluates the mods on your item you want to sell, sums them up and gives you a sell price. (subject to a discount)
Let's face it, there are enough people playing GW and the game's itemization is such that weapons and armor in the game are fairly commoditized. There's no reason I need to choose to buy a +30 health mod from one player over another. This isn't WoW with umpteen million different types of items. I think the values of all of the various mods could be kept track of as easily as the value of silver dye.
I think this is a fair solution that should help cut the amount of WTB/WTS spam. If I get a really good gold drop, I don't want to spend 3 hours trying to sell it for 15k or whatever it "should" be worth. I'd be happy to sell it for 5k at some sort of trader as mentioned above. I just don't want to sell it for 200 gold to the regular trader. So right now, I'm forced to spend the time spamming the trade chat.
You really don't see people spamming trade messages for runes anymore, barring the big ticket items.
Just my thoughts, seeing as how I'm not sure that an auction house as found in other games is technically implementable in this game.

/sign Also an official word on the status of the auction house would be brilliant i'm sure galie said they were in the process of producing one but i have yet to see anything indicating its completion.

I'm thinking the proposal of having an auction house spanning the continent would be ideal, but that it would take too many resources -- the limit on # of ppl allowed in the "auction house" district would be at max and overflowing with ppl who's single purpose would be to stay in the district and sell or buy for their guildies...
An intermediary solution would be a sort of town Buletin Board, where u could put up items for sale, items you're looking for, warnings of scams, etc. The BBS would hold your messages as long as you were in town, allowing others to click on your name to talk to you and buy items. Seems like something that would be more easily implemented and would reduce the trafic of trade spamming, especially in the big trade towns...?
